How One Sentence Can Change the Game

one sentence, change the gameI’m not really a politics kind of girl, but this week’s State of the Union Address was “powerful.”

(Hey, Newt Gingrich even said so!) I didn’t catch all of it, but I did hear President Obama say this:

Nothing worth working for is easy.

Wow, what a powerful statement. Now let’s think about this:

  1. Is running your own business … easy?
  2. Is being the best at whatever it is you do … easy?
  3. Is marketing your business … easy?
  4. Is attracting your ideal customers … easy?

If you answered “no” to any of the questions below, then it’s pretty safe to say that you believe President Obama hit the nail on the head.

It’s so funny, I was talking to my husband the other day and he asked, “why is it so easy to gain weight, but so hard to lose it?” Again, “nothing worth working for is easy.”

While life’s rewards may be tough to reach, boy are they worth it when you finally get there.

Just out of college, I was working as a marketing assistant for a public relations firm in Cleveland, Ohio. It was a small firm so I was planning events, writing press releases, calling clients, and so on. Boy, was that first week hectic! Anyway, the executive assistant walked over to my desk and gave me a print out and said, “Here you go, keep this handy.” I looked down and it was the chorus to a DMX song, “Party Up in Here”:

Y’all gon’ make me lose my mind up in here, up in here
Y’all gon’ make me go all out up in here, up in here
Y’all gon’ make me act a fool up in here, up in here
Y’all gon’ make me lose my cool up in here, up in here”

That moment really stuck with me. For one, it was comical because she was an older Christian woman quoting DMX. And secondly, the song was the perfect relief for those “struggle” days. Classic!

Now, for 2014 my inspirational song is “Can’t Nobody Hold Me Down,” by P. Diddy. It’s an old song, but it works for me.

Can’t nobody take my pride
Uh-uh, uh-uh
Can’t nobody hold me down… ohh no
I got to keep on movin’”

The Challenge

I challenge you to think about and write down the one quote that can change the game for you … that one statement that gets you through those rough times. It may be a song title, it could be an inspirational sentence, whatever. But when things get tough, you need something to pull you out of the pothole.

To being inspired and highly motivated,
